Glossary

ABN
Australian Business Number. This is a unique number allocated to a business based in Australia by the Australian Tax Office. For more information about ABNs, visit www.ato.gov.au.

Active job/vacancy
A job advertised on JobSearch that has not expired and still has positions available.

All job seekers
This includes job seekers who have registered directly on JobSearch and those who have registered through Centrelink or a Job Job Services Australia provider.

Anticipated vacancy
Any vacancy which is reasonably expected to become available at a specified date in the future.

ANZSIC
Australian and New Zealand Standard Industry Code. Used to describe the type of service provided by an employer.

ASCO
Australian Standard Classification of Occupations. The national ABS standard classification of occupations in the Australian Labour Market. This is used for statistical analysis by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

Centrelink
A statutory body within the portfolio of the Minister for Human Services. Centrelink acts as a gateway for people seeking to gain access to government services and payments, including the services of the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

Client type
For job seekers. Job seekers are classified as Stream 1 (Limited), Fully Eligible participants or public job seekers. See individual definitions.

Closed job/vacancy
A job that is no longer being advertised on JobSearch.

Commission work
Typically involves selling goods or services for a percentage of sales receipts; for example, door-to-door sales or telephone canvassing.

Commonwealth
The Commonwealth of Australia. Including officers, delegates, employees and agents of the Commonwealth of Australia.

Deleted job/vacancy
A vacancy that has been removed from JobSearch.

DEEWR
The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. The Department provides the government with advice, programs and services relating to education, training, employment and workforce participation.

DEEWR Customer Service Line 1800 805 260
A free call telephone service, which puts participants and employers in contact with a DEEWR Customer Service Officer in the state or territory where the phone call is made.

DEEWR’s IT systems
DEEWR’s IT computer system accessible by providers, through which information is exchanged between the provider, subcontractors, Centrelink, and DEEWR in relation to employment services. Includes JobSearch.

Disability Employment Network
The Disability Employment Network (DEN) provides specialist assistance to job seekers with disability who require ongoing support to find and maintain employment. DEN is delivered by a network of organisations around Australia.

Employer
An organisation or individual who advertises jobs on JobSearch.

Employer ID
The unique ID issued to an employer when they register with JobSearch. This is used to log in to JobSearch.

Employer registration
The registration details of an employer in JobSearch. Once registered, employers can advertise jobs and find staff. It includes an employer's contact details.

FaHCSIA
The Commonwealth Department of Families, Housing Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. For more information, visit www.fahcsia.gov.au.

Find staff
A JobSearch tool that allows employers to search through resumes to find appropriate staff with the skills required to undertake the position.

Fully Eligible Participant
A job seeker who is registered as unemployed with Centrelink and has access to the full range of Job Services Australia assistance, including receipt of Government income support.

Green Corps
A voluntary development and environmental training program that provides participants with the opportunity to participate in projects that conserve, preserve and restore Australia’s natural environment and cultural heritage. For more information, visit www.greencorps.gov.au.

Host employer
A business entity that provides work at their work place for staff provided by an on-hire employer. The host employer would normally pay a fee to the on-hire employer.

Inact
An abbreviation for Inactive.

Inactive job/vacancy
A job that has reached its referral limit or expiry date, or has been manually set to this status by the employer. If a job is inactive it does not display on JobSearch.

Independent contracting/ors or sub-contracting/ors
Independent contractors or sub-contractors are not employees of the organisation for whom they are doing work.

Indigenous Employment Program (IEP)
The program administered by DEEWR that provides a range of tools to achieve employment and economic development for Indigenous Australians.

Indigenous Employment Strategy
A strategy implemented by a provider designed to attract, develop and retain Indigenous Australian employees within the provider’s own organisation.

Job expiry date
The date when a job will be removed from JobSearch. This is set at the time the job advertisement is created.

Job ID
The unique ID allocated to a job advertisement when it is created on JobSearch.

Job Seeker ID

Job seekers registered by Centrelink or a Job Services Australia provider are issued with a unique identification number. This is used to log in to JobSearch and identifies each job seeker within DEEWR IT and Centrelink computer systems.

Job Services Australia
Job Services Australia is a national network of private and community organisations dedicated to increasing employment participation, playing a greater role in addressing skills shortages and assisting individual job seekers, particularly disadvantaged job seekers to obtain sustainable employment.

Job Services Australia provider
An organisation contracted by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) to provide Job Services Australia services to job seekers.

JobSearch
The Australian JobSearch website.

Jobsearch Facilities
Personal computers or similar devices with broadband internet connectivity, printers and other sundry equipment, which are available for job seekers to use Centrelink offices and in Job Seeker Australia provider offices.

JPO
Job Placement Organisation (JPO). An organisation previously licensed by the Australian Government to source jobs from employers, advertise their jobs on JobSearch, and refer suitable job seekers to these jobs. JPOs will continue to finalise their business on JobSearch, however no new business will be entered into.

Migrant friendly vacancy
A vacancy within an occupation from the Migrant Occupation in Demand (MODL) list, a list of occupations in demand in the Australian labour market. The employer lodging the vacancy on JobSearch has the option to also have it listed on the Skilled Migrant website.

Multi-level marketing
Multi-level marketers typically seek the purchase and/or sale of a product or service, for which remuneration is commission based.

Occ code
Occupational Codes. ASCO codes for occupational categories. See ASCO above.

Occupational categories
Categories used to classify occupation types. This is a subset of ASCO. See ASCO above.

On-hire company/employer
A company who provides (usually short term) employment services and/or staff to employers, and job placements for job seekers.

On target earning (OTE)
An incentive based pay package common to sales-personnel. It usually consists of a basic salary which is supplemented by an additional payment if the employee performs at or reaches the target set for them. Performance above the target often results in a higher payment.

Pending job/vacancy
A job that has been lodged on JobSearch by an employer and is waiting activation. Pending jobs are not displayed on JobSearch.

Password
Your password allows you to access your personal profile pages. Passwords should be kept secret. If you forget your password click the Forgotten your password? link on the JobSearch homepage and follow the instructions. Position
An opportunity for paid employment for a job seeker. May also refer to the number of job opportunities within a vacancy advertised on JobSearch.

Position limit
The maximum number of positions available for a job.

Positions available
The current number of positions available for a job.

Productivity Places Program
A Commonwealth program to provide training places for people who are unemployed or marginally attached to the labour market to assist them to develop skills in areas of labour market shortage.

Public job seeker
A person who is not registered with Centrelink or Job Services Australia.

Public employer
An employer who has registered on JobSearch who is not part of Job Services Australia.

Referral
When a Job Services Australia provider recommends a registered job seeker to an employer or host organisation/employer for consideration of a job on JobSearch.

Referral limit
The maximum number of referrals that can be made to a job.

Referrals available
The number of referrals that can still be made to a job. The number decreases by one for each referral made. When the referral limit is reached, the referrals available will be zero.

Related entity
A company that has financial or non-financial bonds to another company.

Self employment/business opportunity
These vacancies typically seek capital investment or purchase of stock.

Skilled migrant job seeker 
Skilled migrant job seekers have had their skills and qualifications assessed and recognised, and have been granted a General Skilled Migrant visa by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). They have passed an English literacy test, and have been invited to register a skills profile to assist them in finding employment in Australia.

Site
A Job Services Australia provider may operate from a number of offices. Each location is usually recorded as a 'site' for system security and access purposes. Each site is given a site code. A sample site code format is RTGZ.

Status
A registered job seeker can have a status of active or inactive. An active status indicates a requirement for the job seeker to look for work.

Stream Services
Services under Streams 1 to 4, including the Work Experience phase and the services provided to Stream 1 (Limited) participants.

Stream Participant
A Fully Eligible Participant and a Stream 1 (Limited) Participant.

Stream 1 (Limited) Participant
A person who is not a Fully Eligible Participant and who is not:

  • undertaking full time study, unless the purpose for seeking services from the provider is to obtain an apprenticeship or traineeship
  • employed for 15 hours or more each week, unless he or she is seeking services from the provider for the purpose of obtaining an apprenticeship or traineeship
  • an overseas visitor on a working holiday visa
  • an overseas student studying in Australia
  • prohibited by law from working in Australia.

TFN
Tax File Number.

Username
When public job seekers register on JobSearch, they receive a username. This is a unique identifier which allows job seekers to access and manage their JobSearch account.

Vacancy
A legitimate job being advertised or offered which is currently available and includes business opportunities.
